What Does the Service Engine Soon Light Mean on a Nissan

June 21, 2015 by t3atlanta Leave a Comment

You are cruising down the road without a care in the world, and suddenly the bright yellow service engine soon light comes on in your dashboard display. So many thoughts begin to run through your mind. What is causing the light to come on? Is there a major problem with my vehicle? How soon should I take my car to the mechanic? What is this going to cost me?

What does the service engine soon light mean on a Nissan?

Meaning of the Service Engine Soon Light

The service engine soon light is often mistaken for the check engine light. The check engine light is a light to warn you to a possible issue with your exhaust system or emissions system. The service engine soon light can come on for minor issues like a loose gas cap, or for more major problems such as possible engine failure.

man-70603_1280Your Service Engine Soon Light Should Not Cause You to Panic

The light does say service engine soon, but you may not necessarily have to make any major repairs soon. One thing you can do right away is make sure all of your fluids are topped-off. This includes your engine oil, brake fluid, windshield wiper fluid as well as transmission fluid. Physically inspect your car to check for any leaks, wear or signs of damage. A vehicle with leaky fluid is usually not safe for driving and should be repaired immediately.

Diagnose the Issue

You will want to diagnose the issue right away to make sure there is not a serious problem with the engine. If the service engine soon light is flashing, you should to cease driving immediately in order to avoid doing any further damage to your engine and take your car to a service center. A service technician can hook up a code reader to your vehicle’s computer to diagnose any potential problems. Once the diagnostic code is known, you or your mechanic can consult your owner’s manual or service manual to find out exactly what the issue is.

Toyota Recall–What You Should Know

June 12, 2015 by t3atlanta Leave a Comment

Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag manufacturer has recently issued a recall notice for a dozen vehicle brands that are affected by faulty airbags, including a Toyota recall.

The recall comes after issues with the internal deflator and propellant devices, which may deploy improperly and shoot shrapnel into the vehicle’s occupants. Over two million vehicles are affected.

We’ve compiled a couple of great sources which you can use to determine if your vehicle is affected by this recall.

Here is a quick informative video by Consumer Reports explaining the Takata airbag issue:

The second resource, from safercar.gov, determines if your specific vehicle is affected. This website will also cover any recalls over the past fifteen years.

You will need to have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on hand. This number is usually found on the driver’s hand side at the bottom of your windshield, or inside your driver’s side door. Check your vehicle’s manual if you are unable to locate your VIN.

Once you have your VIN handy, simply input the number into the box on the safercar.gov website. The website will display all current recall notices for your vehicle.

Depending on how often you use your vehicle, you may need to schedule a car service as often as every three months. The import mechanic team at T3 Atlanta wishes to provide our clients with affordable and reliable import vehicle service, and we strive to resolve every Lexus owner’s problem.

Infiniti Import Repairs and Maintenance

As a condition of your vehicle’s warranty, you are responsible for maintaining your car. The Infiniti owner’s manual explains two different types of servicing schedules based on a car’s usage.

If you take repeated short trips less than five miles in normal temperatures, drive less than ten miles in freezing temperatures, are in constant stop-and-go traffic in hot weather, drive at a low speed for long distances, drive in dusty conditions, or frequently tow a trailer, your car will fall under Schedule One maintenance. Schedule One is for cars that endure more severe operating conditions and are required to be serviced every 3,750 miles or every three months.

If you operate your car under less severe conditions, your car may be required to follow the Schedule Two maintenance timetable, which requires checks every 7,500 miles or six months.

Toyota Import Repairs and Maintenance

Toyota vehicle owners who drive their car in normal conditions for standard periods of time may have their car serviced every six to nine months.

Short, stop-start journeys are one of the hardest forms of work an engine can endure, and if you are driving your Toyota for short periods of time, you may need to have it serviced more frequently. These types of driving conditions do not allow the engine to reach optimal operating temperature, so it cannot burn off the by-products of combustion. This may cause a reduction of the oil’s efficiency to lubricate, which may ultimately lead to premature engine wear and failure.

If your car endures extreme driving conditions, such as towing heavy loads or driving in very hot, cold, or dusty conditions, your Toyota may also require more servicing than normal. Failing to service your car regularly cannot only damage your vehicle’s warranty, but your vehicle, as well. Your brake system, tires, driveline, and steering components should be inspected on a regular basis to ensure they are functioning properly.

Nissan Import Repairs and Maintenance

If you take repeated short trips less than five miles in normal temperature, trips that are less than ten miles in freezing temperatures, are in stop-and-go traffic in hot weather or low speed/admin driving for long distances, you may need to have your car serviced at frequent intervals.

A car that does not operate under these conditions may require servicing every 7,500 miles, or every six months, whichever comes first. Certain items, such as evaporative emissions control vapor lines, fuel lines, brake lines, exhaust systems, and other objects may require inspection between normal service intervals.

Nissan also offers a premium maintenance schedule, which may optimize the performance, durability, reliability, and resale value of your car.

Independent Toyota Repair

April 26, 2015 by t3atlanta Leave a Comment

What Does It Mean To Be An Independent Toyota Repair Shop?

A independent Toyota repair shop is owned and operated separately from a Toyota company dealer.  A franchised Toyota new-car and -truck dealership is a retailer that sells new and also possibly used cars, including certified pre-owned vehicles, employs automotive technicians, and offers financing. Maintenance at a Toyota dealership is typically a high-margin service and represents a significant profit center for new car dealers, especially since it brings customers back into the showroom to see newer car models.

save-money

Should You Take Your Car To A Dealer Or An Independent Repair Shop?

Consumer Reports recently published the results of their 2014 Car Repair Satisfaction Survey.

The survey was conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center in 2014. It was based on consumer satisfaction with repairs on more than 121,000 vehicles. According to the report, 80,000 were repaired at dealers and more than 41,000 at independents garages.

The survey found that, in general, independents outscored dealership for overall satisfaction, price, quality, courteousness of the staff, and work being completed when promised. With few exceptions, the entire list of independent shops got high marks on those factors.

Why is Customer Satisfaction Higher For Independent Repair Service?

Independent repair shops can charge less for auto repairs than dealers do. This means that you would save money off of the repair bill. It’s nice to save a little extra money, but price isn’t the only advantage independent repair shops offer.

While dealers can offer only OE (Original Equipment) parts, small repair shops can offer OE or aftermarket parts, which are meant to substitute for the OE part. The advantage of aftermarket parts is that, like generic prescription drugs, they are supposed to perform the same function for a lot less money.

The independent repair shop relationship with the community is another great reason to take your car there if you want the money you spend to stay local. Staff at an independent shop will take the time to educate you, follow-up with you, and keep a relationship with you. These independent repair small businesses usually employ local mechanics and office staff. Also, they typically spend a significant amount of time and money supporting organizations that benefit the local community.

T3 Atlanta Toyota Independent Repair Service

T3 Atlanta, has been a successful Independent Toyota Repair Service since 1994.

At T3 Atlanta, our business is to fix your Toyota model auto, not sell you a new car. Unlike a Toyota dealer repair service, we don’t have an interest in your trading in your Toyota vehicle for a newer model. We also don’t have a separate profit center for parts. On occasion, we can save you even more money by repairing or rebuilding parts which are routinely replaced by the dealer.

At T3 Atlanta, it is our specialty to perform Toyota auto repairs at an affordable rate. If you live in Decatur or Smyrna, please contact our office, or visit one of our convenient shop locations for your Toyota auto service or repair.

Check Engine Light Toyota Camry

March 26, 2015 by t3atlanta Leave a Comment

Check Engine Light Toyota Camry–Don’t Panic!

1997-1999_Toyota_Camry - T3 Atlanta

The Check Engine light on your Toyota Camry (also known as a Malfunction Indicator Light, MIL), when illuminated, usually means there’s a problem with the vehicle’s emissions system. If the onboard computer gets a reading that’s a bit out of whack, the check engine light comes on.

If the check engine light illuminates, it will either blink or remain constant, depending on the problem. Either way, the check engine light indicates that your Camry has experience some sort of a problem.  A blinking light indicates a more serious problem that needs immediate attention.

When the check engine light comes on, it could be something as as simple as a loose gas cap or it could be an indicator of a serious engine problem. If the check engine light (MIL) comes on while driving, first check the following:

  1. Is your vehicle low on gas? If it is, refuel the vehicle immediately.
  2. Is the fuel tank cap loose? If it is, tighten it securely.

If the check engine light came on because of a gas cap, the light will go off after taking several driving trips. If the light does not go off, even after several trips, it is time to schedule a maintenance visit with T3 Atlanta as soon as possible.

In late-model cars, a blinking light usually indicates an engine misfire so severe that unburned fuel is being dumped into the exhaust system, where it can quickly damage the catalytic converter, requiring an expensive repair. If that happens, you should reduce power and have the car or truck looked at as soon as possible.

According to Consumer Reports, check the following areas if your Camry check engine light comes on:

  1. Look for a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Check your dashboard gauges and lights for indications of low oil pressure or overheating. These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine as soon as you can find a safe place to do so.
  2. Try tightening your gas cap. This often solves the problem. Keep in mind that it may take several trips before the light resets. Some vehicles have a separate indicator that warns of a loose gas cap before the condition sets off the “check engine” light.
  3. Reduce speed and load. If the “check engine” light is blinking or you notice any serious performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduce your speed and try to reduce the load on the engine. For example, it would be a good idea to stop towing a trailer. Have the car checked as soon as possible to prevent expensive damage.

If your check engine light is on, your Camry check engine light codes can be read by T3 Atlanta and they can tell you what is causing the light to come on. If the light is steady, the problem is not an emergency, but you should schedule an appointment with T3 Atlanta as soon as possible if the light stays on.  Neglecting a minor issue could lead to bigger problems down the road!

Reset Check Engine Light Toyota Camry

If you need to reset your check engine light following these steps should work:

  1. Locate the fuse panel cover under the steering column. Pull down on it with your fingers to remove it.
  2. Examine the diagram on the fuse panel cover and find the electronic control unit fuse.
  3. Remove the fuse puller from inside the fuse panel and use it to pull the fuse out for the electronic control unit.
  4. Put the key into the ignition and turn on the car but don’t turn over the engine. Wait a few minutes then put the fuse back in place. You should notice the check engine light blinking a few times on the instrument panel, then it will go off.
  5. Turn off the engine and replace the fuse panel cover.

If these reset steps do not work, or if you don’t feel like doing the work yourself, take your car to us in Decatur or Smyrna and we can reset your check engine light for you.
